Traces of Responsibility is an interactive documentary that invites viewers to navigate the complex origins and aftermath of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
On a journey through present-day Rwanda the road movie follows the traces of a former minister and convicted war criminal who studied in Switzerland.
Through interactive junctions, viewers have the chance to decide wich trails they want to follow and how deep they immerse into the history.
This way the documentary explores various narrative strands, including an investigative research approach that delves into the life of the former minister and convicted war criminal using archive material, court records, and government documents.
Another strand examines Switzerland's historical connections to Rwanda, investigating its role as well as the financial and educational support of individuals linked to the Genocide.
Parallel to these strands, the documentary captures the process of coming to terms with the past in Rwanda. Viewers witness the experiences of survivors as well as perpetrators, their coexistence in the same country and the mechanisms of reconciliation. The documentary also portraits the new generation with their vision of a peaceful future and artists reflecting on Rwanda's past through their work.
Through a thoughtful combination of interactive storytelling and documentary observations, Traces of Responsibility provides an immersive and multi-perspectival experience, allowing the audience to engage with universal questions of guilt and responsibility surrounding one of the darkest chapters in recent human history.

London, just before Christmas: The strong-willed architect AMAL - on the run from her ex-husband - works at Café Abu Nawas, which belongs to a Kurdish activist and is a popular meeting place for Iraqis in exile. Her friends, the poet TAUFIQ and the IT specialist MUHANAD, come by almost every day. Taufiq has been taking care of his nephew NASSEER since his brother's death, but he is powerless to watch his nephew change under the influence of radical Islamist preacher Sheikh YASSIN, as Nasseer begins to rebel against him as an atheist. Muhanad, on the other hand, left Baghdad only recently to escape the threat that homosexuals face there. But even here and in front of his friends, he doesn't dare to publicly stand by his English lover. The small community is in danger when Amal's ex-husband appears in London and Sheikh Yassin simultaneously seduces Taufiq's nephew Nasseer to take action against the "godless" in Café Abu Nawas.

In 1929 music teacher Paul Leinert receives an unexpected letter from his old friend Otto Schiffmann, a young and talented composer who has moved away from Berlin after a failed marriage. The letter is an invitation for Paul to come and visit Otto in his forest cabin – and to become familiar with his new work, a long-awaited symphony. Taking along his wife Anna together with his colleague Willi, the three find Otto’s cabin but their host is nowhere to be seen. As they go looking for him, Paul notices something odd about the song of the local birds…

At the age of 18, Dora is just beginning to blossom. Her mother Kristin has recently decided that Dora’s psychotherapeutic medication is no longer necessary. As the mentally disabled young woman rushes headlong into life, a man takes a liking to her. The two soon become sexually involved – much to Kristin’s dismay. Unbeknownst to her parents, Dora continues meeting the dubious man, who is obviously taken with her unrestrained sensuality. Whilst her mother’s attempts to have a second child have thus far been of no avail, Dora becomes pregnant.
